Well, whilst at work a conversation about the recent "discovery" of a tomb that a director claims contain the bones of Jesus and Mary Magdelene, who were married and had a kid. As well as several of the Apostles bones. James Cameron and another filmaker claim to have found the tomb, "which was kept secret for decades" and have written a book and made a movie that will air on the Discovery Channel. And what are they using to back up this fantastic claim.
In a tomb several "bone boxes" (oussuaries) with labels such as "Jesus son of Joseph" et cetera. The archeologist and filmakers plan to take DNA samples and perform chemical test. To help prove their theory. They say that the dating of the tomb and the script styles correspond to Jesus's time period. But I don't undestand what's so convincing. First in regard to the DNA test...if they prove that the bones are the bones of family members does that mean that they are definetly without a doubt Jesus's. How would the effectively prove the DNA was Jesus's? Ask God for a blood sample?
Another piece of "evidence" is mathmatical; according to the author of the book the probability of these names occuring altogether is very low, which he says is further evidence of it actually being Jesus's tomb. But in fact, Jesus, Joseph, Judah, and Mary were common names during that time. In fact the name Judah and Jesus are essentially different versions of the same name much like Jim and James are today. Other statisticians are question the sample size and the fact that he was operating on his assumptions.
Another thing that points to the shadiness of this whole deal is that the Tomb was actually discovered by an archeologist 27 years ago and is not a new discovery as Cameron and his cadre of Biblical scholars and mathmaticians purport. Amos Kloner, who originally excavated the site in 1996, published information about the tomb in the journal Antiqot. Kloner, says that the research done by Cameron and his people, is very unscholary. Noting that Jesus's family was poor and had ties to Galilee (where Jesus told the disciples to go after the Resurrection) and that the tomb belonged to an upper-class Jewish family that had been using the tomb for 70-100 years. In fact, the tomb of Christ, which is empty, has been placed near the site of the Crucifixion and is now the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jersulem's Old City.
So it seems Cameron and his self-proclaimed experts should chill out! Nor should Christians worry our pretty little heads about it! Their claims are fanatsy and conjecture operating on the pre-concieved notions of the filmakers/ authors which are not supported given true research. Cameron claims that he's "done the homework," but the homework has already been done!! And the majority of the scientific, archeological, and theological community have rejected Cameron's age old conjecture! This indicates that this is NOT THE TOMB OF JESUS CHRIST! So to echo Kloner, and many other accredited scholars and theologians: "It is a nonsense!"
Okay venting completed... Same fairy tale, different title. The next question is why people are so bent on proving that Jesus was married?! Maybe it's because humans are love intrigue and scandal.
